The Mississippi River is the second longest river in the United States. In Memphis, the river is both an attraction and a thoroughfare for commerce and transportation. It acts as the western border of Memphis. We want to challenge you to swim the Mississippi, or at least a section of it! The Memphis section is 24 miles long and that is our goal for this challenge! Join us this fall from September 2-December 5 to challenge yourself to swim 24 miles in our indoor pool. Log your laps in the Swim binder and track your progress each week to meet your goal. Everyone who participates will receive a T-shirt, and those who complete the 24 miles will receive a medal. This is a free event open to all of our Students, Members, and Staff! Distance goal: 24 miles 24 miles is the distance of the Mississippi river along the Memphis border. Time Frame: You have from September 2 – December 5 to complete the distance. What do you get? A shirt and a medal for completion of the 24 miles. What do you need to participate? Swimsuit/swim trunks goggles You must be a student, staff member, rec center member, or early bird participant. How to participate? 1) Register online 2) Swim laps in the 50 meter pool. 3) Log laps in the Swim the Mississippi book at the lifeguard desk. Distance: Length= one end of the pool to the other (25 yards short course) Lap= down and back (50 Yards short course) 1 Mile= 1760 Yards or 35 Laps short course Goal 24 Miles= 840 Laps short course
